Wealthy Socialite Sentenced to 15 Years to Life in Prison for Fatal Hit-and-Run
Rebecca Grossman, a California philanthropist, was sentenced on Monday after pleading guilty to the charges.
The victims, 11-year-old Mark Iskander and 8-year-old Jacob Iskander, were killed in the crash while crossing the street in a crosswalk.
Grossman, who was driving a Mercedes-Benz, fled the scene of the accident and was later arrested. She initially pleaded not guilty but changed her plea to guilty in April.
In a statement to the court, Iskander's father, Karim Iskander, said that his family's lives had been "irrevocably shattered" by the crash. "Our hearts are broken, and we will never be the same," he said.
Grossman's attorney, Mark Geragos, said that his client was "deeply remorseful" for her actions and that she had made a "terrible mistake." He asked the judge to consider Grossman's philanthropic work and her lack of a criminal record when imposing her sentence.
The judge, however, said that Grossman's actions were "reckless and irresponsible" and that she deserved the maximum sentence. "You took two innocent lives, and you showed no regard for their safety," the judge said.
Grossman will be eligible for parole in 15 years.
