Early Life and Career

Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu was born on October 21, 1949, in Tel Aviv, Israel. His mother, Tzila, was a nurse, and his father, Benzion, was a historian and former editor of the Encyclopedia Hebraica. Netanyahu's family was of Lithuanian and Polish descent.

Netanyahu served in the Israel Defense Forces from 1967 to 1972, during which time he participated in the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War. After completing his military service, he studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned a bachelor's degree in architecture and a master's degree in business administration.

Political Career

Netanyahu began his political career in 1988, when he was elected to the Knesset (Israel's parliament) as a member of the Likud party. He served in a variety of ministerial positions in the governments of Yitzhak Shamir and Ehud Olmert. In 1996, he was elected Prime Minister of Israel, becoming the youngest person to ever hold the office.

Netanyahu's first term as Prime Minister was marked by a number of significant events, including the signing of the Oslo Accords with the Palestinians, the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, and the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. He lost his re-election bid in 1999 to Ehud Barak, but returned to office in 2009.

Netanyahu's second term as Prime Minister was characterized by his strong support for the settlement movement in the West Bank and his opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state. He also led Israel through three wars with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

In 2021, Netanyahu became the first Israeli Prime Minister to be indicted on criminal charges while in office. He was charged with bribery, fraud, and breach of trust in connection with three corruption scandals.

In 2022, Netanyahu returned to power as Prime Minister after leading a right-wing coalition to victory in the Knesset elections. He is currently serving his sixth term as Prime Minister.

Legacy

Benjamin Netanyahu is one of the most controversial and influential figures in Israeli history. His supporters credit him with strengthening Israel's security and promoting its economic growth. His critics accuse him of being divisive and of undermining the country's democratic institutions.

Netanyahu's legacy will likely be debated for many years to come.
