At Least Five Fatalities, 130 Injured in Northern Luzon Tremor

A strong earthquake has hit the northern Philippines, leaving a trail of destruction and causing multiple casualties. According to initial reports, at least five people have died and over 130 have sustained injuries following the powerful tremor that struck the region on Wednesday morning.

Major Impact in the North

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Abra, a province in the northern Philippines. The magnitude of the quake was initially reported as 7.3 by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), but was later revised to 7.1. The quake was felt across the northern Luzon region, as well as in parts of Metro Manila.

Infrastructure Damage and Landslides

The earthquake has caused significant damage to infrastructure, including buildings and roads. Several landslides have also been reported in mountainous areas, hampering rescue and relief efforts. Authorities are currently conducting assessments and providing assistance to the affected communities.

PHIVOLCS has issued a warning for aftershocks, advising residents to remain vigilant and follow safety precautions. The earthquake has also prompted the suspension of classes and other activities in affected areas.
