A Timeline of the Events Leading to His Murder
May 25, 2020:
George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black American man, was murdered in Minneapolis, Minnesota by Derek Chauvin, a 44-year-old white police officer. The incident occurred after Floyd was accused of using a counterfeit $20 bill to buy cigarettes at a convenience store.
May 26, 2020:
Chauvin was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. The other three officers involved in Floyd's death were also fired from the Minneapolis Police Department.
May 27, 2020:
Protests erupted in Minneapolis and across the United States in response to Floyd's death. The protests were largely peaceful, but some turned violent, resulting in looting and arson.
June 1, 2020:
Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. The other three officers involved in Floyd's death were charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and manslaughter.
June 25, 2020:
Chauvin was convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. The other three officers were convicted of aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.
April 20, 2021:
Chauvin was sentenced to 22 years and six months in prison. The other three officers were sentenced to between three and four years in prison.
